PROFILE - MARTIN WELCH
NORTHWEST ADVENTURE has been set up by mountaineering instructor/guide Martin Welch. It is a small personal outfit where Martin tends to be out on the hills with you every day. Based in the south of the Isle of Skye, it is well located to access many mountain ranges including Skye's famous Cuillins - which are Britains most dramatic mountains, also within reach are the Torridons, Kintail, Knoydart and many more ranges to the north and south.
Brought up in Central Scotland, Martin has been mountaineering for over 21 years and moved to the North West Highlands 19 years ago. This proved to be a great place to continue his passion for the mountains and the wild remote areas of Scotland.
Martin also provides professional instruction in rock climbing and leads mountain tours for corporate events management training on Skye.
He has been a member of the AMI (Association of Mountaineering Instructors) for 12 years and obtained his MIC (The highest UK based mountaineering qualification) 10 years ago.
His mountaineering experience includes:
- Reaching 8000m in the Himalaya on an attempt on Makalu.
- Filmed the first non stop traverse of the Alpine 4000m peaks by Simon Jenkins and Martin Moran.
- Climbed over 30 new routes in summer and winter in North West Scotland.
- First ascents of unclimbed mountains in the Indian Himalaya.
- Climbed in Canada, the Himalya, the Alps and Norway.
- Extensive year round experience of Scotland’s mountains.
- Has worked with the renowned mountain guide Martin Moran for over 15 years.
His patience and understanding of the possible fears and anxieties which people can have on the mountains, have ensured many hundreds of clients have had a rewarding, enjoyable and less stressful time on the hills.
